Third Sunday for CCO Collection
April 2013 - Keeping Elbows On the Table
This month, our third Sunday collection for Christian Community Outreach was the lowly, but as anyone who has ever had to make do on a budget can tell you, filling commodity, boxed macaroni and cheese.

The week after our collection, when the Rector and Senior Warden counted the piles of blue (actually, some of them were yellow or red, but it’s amazing how many brands have copied Kraft’s signature style!) there were 218 boxes of the sticky staple. At an average 320 pieces of macaroni per box (never mind how we know that fact—one, two, three…) that’s about 70,000 little pasta elbows! It’s also a lot of suppers for people who need them.

The bin full of boxes totally filled the macaroni-and-cheese shelves at CCO’s storehouse, with the extras taking up temporary residence behind the saltines. By the way, don’t forget to bring in your shopping stamps from Sureway—every sheet we fill is worth $10 to CCO. And CCO is always in need of volunteers, if you have some time to spare.

Next month’s collection: canned beef stew.

March 2013 - Fruit of the Spirit (and the Body)
Our third Sunday collection for Christian Community Outreach continues to capture our attention as a congregation, and bring help to those in our community who need our help. This month, our challenge was to bring the first fruits, literally, and you brought from your abundance in abundance.

When the bin was prepared for transport to CCO, we counted 29 cans of peaches, 24 of pineapple, 18 of mandarin oranges, 18 more of pears, with the reigning champ being fruit cocktail with 50 cans. On top of all that there was a can of cranberry relish, another of a yummy looking tropical fruit salad, a jar of applesauce, assorted veggies, and some special fruit cocktail that included extra cherries.

“Oh, that looks wonderful, said the volunteer who came out to help carry the bin into CCO’s storehouse, “and heavy! All tallied, St. Paul’s brought an offering of 168 cans of fruit to help meet the needs of hungry families in Henderson.

Next month’s collection: boxed mac-and-cheese.

February 2013 - The Paper Queen on the Throne
Our Third Sunday collection of toilet paper for Christian Community Outreach was a comforting success netting 381 rolls of the household necessity! (We don’t know how many sheets that is; the math was too hard!) The Senior Warden just had to squeeze the Charmin.

This month’s collection on Sunday, February 17 will be for standard-sized cans of fruit.

January 2013 - Third Sunday Bounty
December’s Third Sunday for CCO collection of vegetables has already given strength to at least one person from Christian Outreach—the poor guy who came to help move all those cans!

With the help of a couple of sturdy canvas bags and even a cart from the kitchen, on Sunday, December 16 the ushers brought your offerings of corn, peas and green beans. We meant green peas, but some of you are so southern you just naturally went for the black-eyed variety—but CCO Executive Director, Mary Dunham tells us that they would all help feed hungry families.

The final tally totaled 171 cans of vegetables, including a couple of the really big ones, plus a jar of peanut butter left over from last month, and a six-pack of pineapple tid-bits in light syrup—perhaps someone was remembering the dessert course.

We can hardly wait to see what the Parish will do with January’s Third Sunday gift: toilet paper!

December 2012 - Third Sunday for Outreach
Our inaugural run for St. Paul’s new Third Sunday for CCO campaign was a great (and sticky) success!
When Senior Warden, Susan Sauls floated the idea of picking one commodity per month to help fill the shelves at Henderson Christian Community Outreach, we didn’t really know what we were doing—though we knew full well that we were doing the right thing. And when we chose as our first item the humble jar of peanut butter, that deliciously gooey, but high-nutrition staple of American life, we thought the congregation might just say, “Huh?

On Sunday, November 18, in addition to bringing salads and casseroles and desserts for our Parish Thanksgiving Feast, you also brought jars and jars of peanut butter to share with those in our community who need the basics. When the final tally was made and the horse-bucket-full was loaded to fill those shelves at CCO, our little family collected 61 jars of the stick-to-the-roof-of-your-mouth comestible, totaling 1,117.6 ounces (not all of them were 18 oz. jars). That’s 69.85 pounds—heavier than the Senior Warden’s granddaughter, Hannah!

We can hardly wait to see what the Parish will do with December’s Third Sunday gift: canned veggies.
